VIDERE IN THE MEDIA

'Carlos has come to show some of the lead researchers the most recent hidden-camera designs he's been working on. Videre's covert operatives largely use Chinese-made spy cameras that resemble memory sticks. Each has a small, rechargeable battery and records on to SD cards. The devices can be clipped into shirt pockets, but the camera lenses must be visible in order for them to be able to function effectively, which exposes some operatives to danger.

The African state in question knows it is being watched. Political activists and militia members have delivered stark warnings.

Those attending a rally were recently told: "It is a political meeting. Is that clear? It's a family affair. No one should record what's happening here because it's an internal matter. If we catch you recording us, you will be [in] trouble."'

SKOLL AWARD 2016

‘Even as technology empowers anyone with a smartphone to be an international broadcaster, the world’s most vulnerable populations remain voiceless.

Oren Yakobovich and Videre are changing that by giving local activists equipment, training, and support to safely capture footage of human rights violations, and distribute this to influence media, political leaders, and courts.

Perpetrators have been brought to trial, human rights defenders operate more securely, and leaders who once incited violence now warn against it.’

TED TALKS 2014: OREN YAKOBOVICH

‘To see is to believe, says Oren Yakobovich — which is why he helps everyday people use hidden cameras to film dangerous situations of violence, political fraud and abuse. His organization, Videre, uncovers, verifies and publicizes human-rights abuses that the world needs to witness.’
